Ideally a female should have at least 2 heats before you even think of breeding her. It just takes too much out of them while they're still growing themselves.

A male is usually fertile at about the same age as he starts lifting his leg consistently to relieve himself. I'm just now starting my 13 month old male standard poodle to breed. Even at this age he had a bit of a time deciding what needed to go where and how it was all done. LOL He was fortunate to have patient, experienced females to learn with.

Many a male dog has been badly injured being too pushy with the wrong female, so please keep that in mind. I'd hate to see your boy tore up. If you decide to go that route, do your research first so it's a good thing and you don't regret it.

Hi all Very Happy
Freya had her first litter at 2 years old after 3 seasons. They say 2 years or 3 seasons whichever comes first. We also have a choc F1 boy called Robbie, whom we will stud out if his hips, elbows and eyes are ok. For Freya's hips we paid 145.00, and eyes were 35.00, but depends on vets, i suppose.
I have heard that dogs do get to be a pain in the neck, after their first bitch, but, hey, ours is a pain in the neck anyhow, so no change much there Laughing For some reason he looks like a highland cow (not sure who his mum was) Laughing Laughing
We thought we would see how it went, and if it was all too much hassle, then you can always neuter i suppose. He is such an attractive dog, like Jerry there, it would be a shame not to pass a few good genes on. As someone else said they do need to be a year old though before testing can commense, and the scores should be 3 or less in each category.
Hope this also helps
Amber PS
Jerry if you are reading this is there anywhere to put pics up on your fab site
Please

Is it essential to have all the tests done if you want to stud your doodle?

Hi Jerry
Absolutely, yes.
At one year old, is the time.
I don't much like having them put under general anethestic, but it is only for a short while
This is just for hips and elbows. There are certain places that do them under sedation, let me know if you are interested and i will find out for you.
The eye test is done once a year down at a place called Hythe, Hants, near the new forest. Seadown vets, with a Mr Mason. There is only a few places that is equiped to do them. It is a very quick procedure done whilst you are there waiting.
If these tests are not met, you have no idea of any problems that could be passed on such as hip displacia (HD) a very painful condition. Any prospective bitch needs also to meet requirements with certificates for you to see.
Hope this helps.
I am annoyed at the moment as i cannot download my pics, there is a problem with my PC.
I was looking forward to putting a pic of Robbie on.
Amber

Hi Jerry
What generation dood is he?
Usually you would charge the price of a puppy.
But for a first timer, a little less, say 20%, or come to an agreement
with the bitch owner.
A first gen dood is pretty versatile, so another First gen, or whatever really.
I have heard that dogs become a pain after there first mate, and every bitch to come around is a conquest to them Laughing And out and about they are harder to control.
They also mark their territory wherever too. Not trying to put you off though Laughing
